On 17 June 2024, the Federal Court of Australia handed down a consent determination recognising that Native Title exists over Kabi Kabi Country. The hearing was held in Brisbane, with Kabi Kabi Elders, community members, and representatives in attendance.
The determination confirms the Kabi Kabi People’s native title rights and interests over a significant area across the Sunshine Coast, Noosa, Gympie, Moreton Bay, Somerset, Fraser Coast, and Bundaberg regions. It reflects the continued connection of the Kabi Kabi People to our lands and waters under traditional laws and customs.
The determination was made by consent, following years of research, negotiation, and legal process. It marks a formal legal recognition of what Kabi Kabi People have always maintained—that our connection to Country is ongoing and deeply held.
Kabi Kabi Peoples Aboriginal Corporation (KKPAC) has been established as the Registered Native Title Body Corporate (RNTBC) to hold and manage these rights on behalf of the Kabi Kabi People.
This determination provides a legal foundation for future decision-making, cultural heritage protection, and engagement with government and proponents in relation to Country. It represents a key step forward in asserting Kabi Kabi cultural authority and supporting our long-term aspirations for Country and community.
