TWO Kabi Kabi leaders recognised at Sunshine Coast NAIDOC Gala 2026

KKPAC couldn't be more proud. Not one, but two remarkable Kabi Kabi leaders were singled out and recognised for their dedication, strength and commitment that is creating a lasting impact for our community.
Those two legends are Kerry Jones and Aunty Beverly Hand.
Kerry Jones was first out of the blocks being recognised with the Black Excellence Caring for Country award. Kerry is more than a KKPAC Director and cultural leader; he is is known to lead with integrity and an unwavering commitment to the environment and Kabi Kabi people.
Through his work with Kabi Kabi Rangers and Cultural Heritage teams he teaches stewardship and delivers on the initiatives set by our old people. He calls it 'boots on the ground'. When he's not on country he's locked in a boardroom arguing fearlessly for the rights Kabi Kabi people. He lives his belief that 'we all gotta work together' and his focus on finding the pathway for all people on the Kabi Kabi estate is earning him fans everywhere.
Kerry dedicated his award to all the people who work for country, with a special shout out to Aunty Bev - and no sooner had he recognised her than she was called to the stage herself, to the delight of the crowd and especially her supportive family, to accept the Black Excellence Lifetime Achievement award.
Elder Aunty Beverly Hand is a treasured Kabi Kabi cultural knowledge holder, mentor and leader. Her wisdom, strength and generosity sharing knowledge helped guide countless people over the years. Aunty Bev carries the stories, traditions and Kabi Kabi cultural values with dignity and pride, ensuring that these important lessons are passed on.
Her dedication to culture, family, community and Country embodies the spirit of what it means to be an Elder. She took a moment to dedicate the award to her mum, and brought the room to a standstill recalling the lessons her mum taught that guided her to this point. We all remembered her for a very special moment.
Together, Kerry and Aunty Beverly represent the heart and soul of the Kabi Kabi community. They remind us of the importance of walking proudly, honouring our ancestors and working together with our allies to create opportunities for culture and country. Their leadership, resilience, and commitment strengthens our people and inspire us all to strive.
